The plot thickens…

As with many online endeavors, sometimes one must be flexible and change plans. I speak of my site that will sell Nature Photos digitally. This is more of an adventure than I had initially thought.

First, I had my parameters. The ecommerce section must be able to handle digital downloads gracefully. The design should be appropriate for showcasing digital photos. Not alot of text here ๐Ÿ™‚ The checkout process must meet my very stringent “Elegant Simplicity”. This involves using Stripe as my Payment Gateway. And that requires the install of an SSL certificate for security purposes. And this is my first install of SSL on my new server. After over an hour, still not installed. It is one of those logic puzzles that seems to change slightly each time you play it.

So, I took a step back and decided to find/install a plugin that would create a nice “gallery” for viewing and eventually purchasing digital photos. And my criteria here was not to spend ANY money until I was sure which plugin would be best. And even then, if there were a plugin that would get the job done correctly for free, I wold consider using that.

I have tried the free version of both the “go to” plugins for this type of thing and found both to be lacking in different ways. Often, the free version of a plugin is not much more than a teaser. Which seems to be the case here.

So, I decided to make a change to the theme itself. The basic/default theme that comes with WordPress called “Twenty Fifteen” is elegantly simple, and yet not quite what I am looking for. I will be adding the Beaver Builderย  Theme and see how that goes. You may or may not see it if you go to www.cape1.com. Since no one is paying me to get this site done, I am proceeding on my own time frame. Slow but sure.

Rest assured, if this were a client site, the issue would be solved already and they would be making money online ๐Ÿ™‚

I am going to ask for guidance from my server folks on the SSL. I am most likely doing everything correctly but in the wrong order. Believe me, SSL installation is quite the rabbit hole. No regular person would ever want to attempt it.

The good news is, that if you need a nature photo, you can go now to www.cape1.com and download fantastic hi resolution photos for free ๐Ÿ™‚

One of the main reasons I am doing this project is, well, twofold. Two provide fodder for this blog. And to keep my WordPress skills sharp and current. “Knowing” how to do something and actually doing it are two different beasts.

Addendum: I did get the new theme installed and if you did not happen to see the site before, I assure you, it is much better ๐Ÿ™‚ More like my vision.

Rock on,

Dave
