Head on over to wix.com or WordPress.com. Both are easy. Kind of sort of. And both are free or darn close to free. Both will upsell you like crazy. That is the world we live in. And you will invest some time. How much depends. On you. And your level of tech experience/savvy.
The main thing is that you will learn. And experience the joy/sorrow/success/failure of website design. Some will run with it and have their lives totally transformed by the experience. Some will run to find someone to pay to do it for them, having learned that although parts may be “easy”, sometimes putting the whole thing together can be daunting. SEO? Hosting? Caching? Social Media? Trust me, plenty daunting 🙂
Often I speak with someone who “wants a website”. So I ask if they have a logo? Nope. Domain name? Nope. Business name? Nope. This is a very common scenario. And the great news is that you do not even need these to have at it with WIX or WordPress.com. You can still start and begin to experience the incredible rush of building your own website. However, at some point, you will need to consider the above points. Because they all speak to branding. And branding is king. Right after content is king.
No logo? Fine, just use text for your “logo” initially. Seems to work pretty good for, say, FEDEX, right? No domain name? One can be added later, and you can still build your site at WIX or WordPress.com.
Me, I am more of a YouTube guy for learning. Some prefer a classroom environment. Not many want to read a book on web design these days, that is for sure. The very best way I know of to get an overview of WordPress (the real WordPress, NOT WordPress.com) is to watch these videos. Yeah, I know, that is needlessly confusing. But for now, just trust. WordPress.COM is hosted WordPress. The other WordPress (some call it SELF hosted) is what I use, and what every other website builder/designer/developer also uses. This blog is self hosted. The self hosted WordPress gives much more flexibility. And a bit less hand holding. Bonus link to some FREE Video samples from WP101!
I digress. Enough of that nonsense. Go to either or both of the sites mentioned in the first sentence of this post and have at it. Try one or both. If you try both, you will have the advantage of knowing which one you like better. That is powerful info.
I am considering splitting this site off into a blog only and a separate site for explaining my hosting and design services. I have an idea for what I think would be an interesting product that would feature ease of use. Think if Facebook was not super easy to use! It for sure would not be what it is today. I believe that ease of use is truly the most important thing about any online business/website. One needs to make sure that the customer feels that “I can do this! This is easy and fun!”. And guess what? That is not easy to do. It takes alot of work to make something “easy”.
That’s a wrap. More to come.
I am enjoying the quiet of Winter and hope you are too. If anyone knows of a place that is this quiet in the Summer, please let me know.
All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone. – Blaise Pascal
